Edible Beauty Founder Anna Mitsios On Clean Skincare, Supplements, And Her Go-To Natural Sunscreen

Edible Beauty Australia founder Anna Mitsios left a career in finance to become a naturopath in a fertility clinic, which then led her to create the award winning green beauty and wellness brand.

Below, you can find Anna’s best beauty tips, including the inner and outer beauty products that will help you achieve that inner glow (because who doesn't want to put their best face forward for the new year).

Anna created Edible Beauty Australia in 2014 whilst working as a naturopath in a natural fertility clinic. She was recommending that her clients make changes to their personal care products, alongside their food and lifestyle habits.

She was shocked to find that there were very few options available for skincare products that were "edible", but still luxurious and therapeutic. As a result, she embarked on creating her own range. Anna started quite literally whipping shea butter, cocoa butter and rose water in her mother’s cake mixer, eventually sharing the creations with friends and family. Turns out, they were a hit.

After much research, courses and cosmetic chemist meetings, Anna created the Edible Beauty Australia brand which now includes over 30 high performance skincare products, botanical beauty teas, delicious inner beauty elixirs as well as her newly launched beauty tool. And all without a cake mixer in sight!

What inspired you to leave your career in finance and start your own beauty brand?

About seven years ago, I transitioned from a career in finance to naturopathy. This was triggered by my diagnosis as a Type 1 diabetic at the age of 18. I became very passionate about the incredible ability of natural herbs, diet and supplements to manage my health condition. I also became increasingly conscious of endocrine disrupting toxins in the beauty products I was using. The Edible Beauty range was created six years ago whilst I was working at a natural fertility clinic. I was recommending that in addition to changes to their food and lifestyle routines, my patients make changes to their personal care products. But as it turns out, there was a huge gap in that market.

Working as a naturopath, were your patients aware that the beauty products they were using could have been potentially affecting their hormones and fertility?

Interestingly, women were very aware of the way foods and lifestyle habits can affect their hormones, but didn’t consider how disruptive certain ingredients can be when applied to the skin. One of the studies I often share with people, including my patients, is a study done on the umbilical cords of babies. It shows over 250 toxins, including growth retardants and brain neurotoxins, being found in the cords, all of which are linked to products the mother was putting on her skin. We now know that we can absorb over 60% of what we apply topically, but at that time this statistic was also not common knowledge.

Fast forward six years, would you say women are more conscious? What are they demanding from their beauty products and supplements?

Women are now definitely more conscious of what they are putting on and in their bodies. We are also now expecting more than just safe skincare – we want green, sustainable and ocean-friendly beauty products, which comes alongside the rising awareness of how our beauty choices impact the environment. Beauty should not come at a cost to the environment, animals or our health. Women are also now demanding that companies provide an internal solution to our beauty concerns as we now understand that a holistic approach is crucial to glowing skin!

What Edible Beauty products would you recommend to women that want to protect their skin, increase energy levels and achieve that inner glow in the new year?

The holiday season can definitely be stressful, exhausting and indulgent. Late nights, alcohol, sugar, stress and extended periods in the sun can all take their toll, so ramping up your inner and outer beauty routine can certainly help.

I recommend enjoying a serve of our Native Collagen powder daily. This not only provides a potent antioxidant boost to cancel out any free radical damage, but also four times the daily recommended intake of Vitamin C to ensure healthy collagen production. Vitamin C can also keep energy levels high, so it’s great when you need a bit of a boost.

My other recommendation is taking a daily shot of our Beauty Detox Elixir. This elixir contains herbs designed to support digestion and boost your liver’s detoxification abilities. The detox shot works well before an indulgent meal or a few drinks to ensure toxins are being cleared quickly and food is digested optimally!

One of my favourite topical products is our & Sleeping Beauty Purifying Mousse. It’s a sleep mask and it’s a brilliant quick fix for the skin overnight. It contains pink clay, zeolite, avocado oil and snowflower seed, making it hydrating and purifying (rather than drying). It’s great at preventing puffiness after an indulgent night out! It also works to correct an oily t-zone and hormonal acne breakouts.

Finally, protect skin against the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays with our Basking Beauty Natural Sunscreen SPF 50. It’s a lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen formulated to effectively protect while providing nourishment, hydration and anti-ageing benefits to the skin.
